The sixth Commandment in the Bible is found in Exodus but there are several others as well.
Exodus 20:12
Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
The Ten Commandments in the Old Testament deals with how His people should live and can be summed up as simply to have love for God, and for man. And the lack of love…and honour seems to be the biggest problem in our world today. In Wikipedia, it says: “Honour or honor is the idea of a bond between an individual and a society as a quality of a person that is both of social teaching and of personal ethos, that manifests itself as a code of conduct, and has various elements such as valour, chivalry, honesty, and compassion. The Dictionary says: “1. Regard with Respect” & “2. Fulfill (an obligation) or Keep (an agreement). It is a term that combines Honesty, respect and pride. For someone to be morally upright, and competent, you must show respect for others.
Just as there are people that behave as the perfect Christian once they’re at Church, but behave not so well all week and all the way into the parking lot at Church, there are people who claim respect for others, but never show it!! That is unless they have witnesses…
In Deuteronomy 5:16, it says in a bit more detail: “Honour thy father and thy mother, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
God rebuked the Priests of Israel in Malachi who should have been setting a proper example of how His children are to conduct themselves.
In Matthew 19:19, Jesus speaks the words, “Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” But in Mark chapter 7:9-13 He says, “…Full well ye reject the commandment of God: that ye may keep your own tradition. For Moses said, “Honour thy father and thy mother; and whosoever curseth thy father or mother, let him die the death. But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightiest be profited by me; he shall be free. And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or mother; making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.”
Just like when Jesus spoke to the religious leaders of His day, we are hypocrites when we skillfully push aside God’s law to do whatever we want, then act like we’re the most honorable of people and Christians. It is not okay to say to our parents, “Sorry, I can’t help you.” When you do, you disrespect them and their needs. The same goes for other people as well. You also cancel out God’s word, which it is not in your place to do!!
